Is it covered
The short answer for public coverage is no. Public health insurance does not fund GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight management. Private and workplace plans are a different question, and the answer varies plan by plan.
Public
Public health insurance does not currently fund GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight management. That is the position regardless of your BMI or which conditions you have documented.
Coverage where the same molecule is prescribed for type 2 diabetes is assessed separately and under different criteria. The two should not be conflated, and prescribing a diabetes product in order to obtain coverage for weight is not appropriate.
The TX Trillium Drug Program exists for households facing high drug costs relative to income, and it is worth understanding what it does and does not cover before assuming either way. See Insurance and coverage, Ozempic and GLP-1 and type 2 diabetes for the rest of it.
Finding out
Ask specifically about GLP-1 medication for weight management, naming the product if you know it. General questions get general answers.
Whether it is required, and exactly what documentation they want. This is the answer that saves the most time later.
Some plans cover it but with an annual maximum that a year of treatment will exceed. Worth knowing before month eight.
A verbal yes from a call centre is not something you can hold anyone to. Ask for written confirmation.
If not covered
Most people in this market are paying privately, so it is worth planning on that basis and treating coverage as a bonus rather than an assumption.
If you are self-paying, the practical question stops being which molecule performs best in trials and becomes which one you can stay on for a year. Those are frequently different answers, and it is a reasonable thing to say out loud at the consultation. Related reading: Medication cost, Program cost and Semaglutide vs tirzepatide.

Common questions
Public coverage, private plans, caps and an answer you can rely on.
Told me plainly that the public plan would not fund it before I got my hopes up. Then helped me check the workplace plan, which did.
Found out about the cap in month one rather than month nine. Changed how I budgeted the second half of the year.
Not covered at all. We picked the option I could sustain rather than the one with the better trial numbers, and that was the right call.
Asked whether they could write it as a diabetes prescription for coverage. Got a clear no and a proper explanation why.

Next step
Public health insurance will not fund it for weight management, but your private plan might. Three questions to your insurer settle it before you commit to anything.
